Procedural 3D Modelling of Old Town Pocatello, Idaho for Redevelopment Based on Ecosystem Services

Rapid urbanization has influenced land cover and ecosystem services in the urban regions in western U.S. Pocatello is a small city in southeastern Idaho that faces a range of challenges regarding sustainable future growth. It is important to understand what different designs can bring to local ecosystem services. Traditional 2D urban planning is not sufficient to visualize the future scenarios spatially, especially in a vertical dimension. Procedural modelling is a grammar-based language that can efficiently build a 3D virtual city at a large scale. The aim of this study is to build a rule-based 3D model that has detailed streetscapes and landscapes for Pocatello Old Town to assist decision makers in the City of Pocatello to find a sound design. This model displays the changes of land surface temperature, stormwater interception, air pollutant concentration, impervious percentage, and cost of development. The objectives for this study were: (1) build a 3D model for Pocatello Old Town, (2) integrate key attributes in the model for planning and geodesign, (3) visualization in 3D and VR, and WebGL (4) create future scenarios and analyze the changes on local ecosystem services. The results showed that planting more trees and replacing impervious parking lots with green parking lots can mitigate stormwater runoff, reduce land surface temperature, and remove air pollutants. With this approach, the decision-makers in the City of Pocatello can analyze future scenarios both visually and statistically. The redevelopment stretch would also provide residents with diverse recreational opportunities and improve the ecological environment in Pocatello.
